Problem: How are sugar and salt
similar? different?
Materials: Your group will need the
following: hot plate, measuring
cup, one cup of white granulated
sugar, 1/4 cup of salt, 2
potholders, a cast iron skillet,
2 mixing spoons, 1 tbs. butter,
an aluminum pie tin, 12 plastic
spoons, a cup of water, wash
bowl, magnifying lens.

1. Look at the salt and sugar first 1.
without the magnifying lens and
then with the lens. Draw pictures
of what you see.
2. Taste a pinch of salt and a pinch 2.
of sugar. Describe the tastes.
3. Pour 1/4 cup of salt in one side of the 3.
iron skillet and 1 cup of sugar in the
other side. Place the skillet on the hot
plate. Heat on medium heat. While it is
heating, butter the pie pan. Heat
until the sugar has liquified and turned
pale brown. With mixing spoons and a
pot holder carefully spoon some of the salt
and some of the sugar onto the buttered
pie tin keeping them separate. BECAREFUL;
THEY ARE VERY HOT! When cool, everyone
take one spoonful of sugar and a pinch of
salt and taste. Record your observations.
Discard the tasting spoon into the wash bowl.
4. Continue heating the remaining 4.

black. With mixing spoons and a
pot holder, carefully spoon some of
the salt and some of the sugar onto
the buttered pie tin keeping them
separate. BE CAREFUL; THEY ARE VERY
HOT! Also put a small amount of sugar
in the cup of water. When cool,
everyone take one spoonful of sugar
and a pinch of salt and taste. Record
your observations. Discard the
tasting spoon into the wash bowl.
